January 2010 Review of the Month – Part 2

12 Feb

Ok, the real stuff following yesterdays tongue in cheek ‘review’ to the beginning of the year (Yeah – it was a ‘P’ take!!)

The Yeovil Town and Bristol Rovers home games were rearranged, plus a visit to near neighbours Charlton Athletic.
In recent years with attendances dropping and atmosphere sucked out of Brisbane Road, losing at home has become as regular as John Terry’s management team trying to flog off a tour of Chelsea’s training ground.
And after not playing for three weeks, the game against Yeovil could have gone either way. We took an early lead through Tammy, and Scott McGleish added a second 11 minutes from time.
I’m told there were impressive first starts for loanees Nicky Adams and Matthew Briggs, plus signing to the end of the season Jonathan Tehoue came on for the last fifteen minutes.
The win moved Orient out of the relegation zone, up two places to 18th.
Next up was an altogether more tougher trip across London on a Monday night to unbeaten at home, unbeaten in 14 games, 2nd place Charlton Athletic who were looking to go joint top on points with Leeds and Norwich.
Only a mad man could really expect Orient to take anything from this match, but it was live on Sky Sports, and just occasionally Orient do raise themselves for the big occasion (Portsmouth, Fulham, Oxford, Notts Forest away).
Charlton started the better of the two teams, but never really threatened the goal. Orient started more positively in the second half and took the lead with a Scott McGleish header after good work from Nicky Adams and Charlie Daniels down the right. Just two minutes later Ryan Jarvis had a shot hit the post with the keeper beaten and that could have wrapped it up for Orient. Tehoue came on again and impressed as Orient held on for a famous victory.
Carlisle away looked like Orient falling back into bad habits, after the Lord Mayors show if you will, and fell 2-0 behind in the first on their longest trip of the season. But a battling second half performance saw Jarvis pull one back in the 58th minute, and levelled when Danny Livesey headed into his own net in trying to clear a Jarvis header.
In the 90th minute Livesey cleared off the line from Nicky Adams to deny Orient what would have been an amazing victory.

Orient started the month in the relegation zone with 3 postponements because of the weather, but the three games they did play in January saw 2 wins and a draw, 7 points, Goal difference of 5-2, and moved up to 18th.
(And better things to come with the first game of February v Bristol Rovers!!)

League One Ups, downs and Play-offs

Scunthorpe took the last play-off spot with a late equaliser edging out their opponents Tranmere.
Play-offs
Millwall v Leeds (saturday) Scunthorpe v MK Dons

Orient kept 14th spot with a Dean Morgan equaliser against Huddersfield and Swindon missed out after leading 2-0 at Peterborough who came back to draw.
In the relegation zone, Carlisle started well with a 7th minute goal against Millwall and held on for a 2-0 win which took them above Northampton, who had the short straw today with a trip to Eland Road which they lost 3-0. A late winner for Brighton also secured their safety.

Well done to Brentford, Wycombe and Exter for automatic promotion from League Two. The fourth from the play-offs will be Bury, Gillingham, Rochdale or Shrewsbury.

League One Final Day Scoreboard

2 May

As things stand: Carlisle winning, Brighton winning and Northampton losing. Northampton (and Crewe) will be relegated.
If Tranmere win at Scunthorpe they will replace their hosts in the last play-off spot.
Play-offs: MK Dons v Tranmere, Leeds v Millwall (as it stands)
An Orient win or draw would see us take 14th spot, but defeat could see Swindon sneak above us.
